Chris Hemsworth Trained For Extraction 3 With A Kettlebell And A Band. No Gym Required.
Chris Hemsworth spent his pre-Extraction 3 break in Costa Rica with no gym in sight, so he built a full session out of one kettlebell and one resistance band, posted to Instagram on July 17, 2026. The workout hit legs, shoulders, back, arms and core using two pieces of equipment that fit in a backpack.
What Did Chris Hemsworth Actually Post?
On July 17, 2026, Hemsworth shared a video from Costa Rica showing a poolside training session built entirely around a kettlebell and a resistance band, done while on a break before filming begins on Extraction 3. He captioned the clip: "A little Extraction 3 training sesh in the blistering beautiful heat of Costa Rica."
The session covered a genuine full-body split: legs, shoulders, back, arms and core, all worked using combinations of the kettlebell and the band rather than a rack of dumbbells or a cable machine. Multiple outlets, including Men's Journal, Men's Health, Fitness Volt and Cinemablend, picked up the clip within days, and it's continued circulating on fitness pages since.
Why Would An A-List Actor Train This Way Instead Of Hitting A Gym?
Hemsworth is training for one of the most physically demanding roles in his career, on a tight travel schedule, in a location without a full gym. That's precisely the scenario resistance bands were built for. A kettlebell and a band cover pulling, pushing, rotational and stabilizing movement patterns without needing a facility at all.
The training principle underneath this is well established. A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis published in SAGE Open Medicine found that elastic resistance training produces strength gains comparable to conventional resistance training equipment across a range of populations and program designs. The equipment isn't what makes a session effective. Tension, range of motion and consistency are what make it effective, and a resistance band delivers all three without needing a rack, a bench or 40kg of plates in your luggage.
What Exercises Were In The Routine?
Based on the footage and reporting on the session, the workout combined banded and kettlebell movements across all five major patterns: banded kettlebell curls, banded reverse fly, banded kettlebell side bends, banded kettlebell suitcase carries, banded glute kickbacks, banded hip abduction, banded single-arm fly, banded Pallof holds, banded single-arm rows, banded rotational punches and a half-kneeling kettlebell press.
| Setup | Equipment needed | Packs into | Setup time | Covers full body |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full commercial gym | Racks, benches, machines, plates | Doesn't travel | None, but requires membership access | Yes |
| Hotel gym | Whatever equipment is on site | Doesn't travel, inconsistent | Variable | Sometimes |
| Kettlebell + tube band | 1 kettlebell, 1 to 2 tube bands | Carry-on bag | Under 2 minutes | Yes |
How Do You Build The Same Style Of Session At Home?
You don't need his exact program to get the same style of workout. Here's a bodyweight-plus-bands template that hits the same five patterns he used: legs, back, shoulders, arms and core.
- Legs: banded squats or reverse lunges, holding a light band under tension through the full range of the movement.
- Back: banded rows, anchoring the band low and pulling to the hip to mimic the pulling pattern from his session.
- Shoulders: banded overhead presses or lateral raises for the pushing and lateral work.
- Arms: banded curls and tricep pressdowns, the same accommodating-resistance curl style seen in the clip.
- Core: banded anti-rotation holds or Pallof presses, matching the rotational and stabilizing work from the routine.
Two rounds through the five patterns, minimal rest between exercises, is enough to build a genuine 20 to 25 minute session anywhere: a hotel room, a backyard, or poolside like Hemsworth's.

HPG's stackable bands are built for exactly this kind of on-the-road session. The PowerTube Pro set is a solid starting kit for building this five-pattern routine on the road. If you want the same full range Hemsworth gets from stacking accommodating resistance onto a kettlebell, the PowerTube Ultra gives you up to 45 resistance combinations from a set that still packs down to fit in carry-on luggage.

Is Minimal Equipment Training Actually As Effective As A Full Gym?
For maintaining strength and muscle while traveling, yes. The 2019 SAGE Open Medicine meta-analysis found comparable strength outcomes between elastic resistance and conventional equipment, and more recent research on combined kettlebell and band training shows the two tools cover complementary weaknesses: a kettlebell loses tension at the top of a curl or press, while a band adds resistance exactly where the kettlebell runs out.
